Billy Joel Jokes About Ex Christie Brinkley Dating John Mellencamp in Concert

Part of Billy Joel‘s in-concert appeal (he holds the record for most solo shows at famed venue Madison Square Garden) is that he drops the occasional amazing aside. After performing a song inspired by an ex, for example, he’ll typically deadpan, “And then we got divorced.” It’s scripted, sure (he does the same joke at most shows), but still more honest than most pop stars who go on stage and belt out love songs about people they broke up with.

Well, Joel got in an even better one at a recent concert. After singing “The Longest Time” — a hit about ex-wife Christie Brinkley — at a recent MSG concert, Joel told the audience, “And now she’s dating John Mellencamp.” [via Us Weekly].

Brinkley and Mellencamp have been seen on dates together since early September, and it seems Joel – who’s still on good terms with his ex – is fully aware of her love life.

As for the rock legend, Joel recently married his fourth wife in a private Fourth of July ceremony on his Long Island estate. They welcomed a daughter into the world in August.

At the very least, his new wife will never be the subject of post-song asides, because Joel has permanently retired from writing new material.
